Reporting to the Director of Planning and Lands, the Community Planner is responsible for providing comprehensive community planning advisory services to the Kivalliq Region hamlets to ensure that each council has appropriate planning tools, adequate technical advice and assistance to manage the use and planned development of the land in the communities.
The position and incumbent are located in the Rankin Inlet Kivalliq Regional Office. The incumbent must deliver planning services within legislative, policy, directions and guidelines developed for the Nunavut Government, and in accordance with the wider objectives of the Territory’s Community Planning Programs, as delivered by Headquarters Planning and Lands Division. The incumbent plays an active role towards advising community councils to facilitate a coordinated approach to community planning, in line with land development objectives occurring Territory-wide.
The incumbent ensures that all planning processes are performed under the correct procedures of the Planning Act and other territorial legislation and related departmental policies and procedures.
The Community Planner is primarily responsible with proving professional expertise in assisting regional hamlet councils and local residents in identifying planning and land needs through community consultation and in partnership with the hamlet. The Community Planner is also responsible for initiating the development of action plans and implementing strategies and overseeing the delivery of projects to the communities.
To be considered for this position, candidates must have a Degree in urban and regional planning, or related field, from a recognized post-secondary institute, and eligible for, membership to the Canadian Institute of Planners, plus 1 year related experience as a municipal planner.
To be successful in this position, candidates should also demonstrate strong computer skills and ability to work in or adapt to a cross cultural working and community environment.
Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official language is an asset.
Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatugangit is an asset.
