This week the University of Waterloo will be hosting its Spring 2018 Convocation ceremonies. Every convocation is special and unique in its own way.

It is a momentous event for every one of our honoured graduates, but this Convocation will mark a very special milestone for our young university: our 200,000th graduate.

Our community of 200,000 alumni hail from 145 countries and are reshaping our world with the intellect, drive and creativity they honed while at Waterloo.

I couldn’t be more proud of this community and our ability to impact society in a positive and meaningful way.

A Journey Built on Tradition, But Completely Unique

We are a young institution, but we are also built on a set of traditions that continue to define our University.

Our founders created our institution on the idea that there was a different, better way for a modern university to educate the best and the brightest Canada had to offer. The University of Waterloo students, faculty, staff and alumni have proven that being instilled with a sense of “why not” is uniquely Waterloo and is changing the face of industries on a global scale.

To our graduating students, I hope you take our pioneering spirit with you, wherever you may go. You have the potential to shift the world and leave your mark, and you can do it as a community. Please remember that even as you take the next step in your life, you are part of a life-long family of Warriors who can all tell the world with pride, “I went to Waterloo.”

Chancellor Tom Jenkins’ Final Convocation

As our students are reaching a tremendous milestone this week, change is also on the horizon for many, including our University.

This will be the final Convocation week for our esteemed Chancellor, Tom Jenkins. Tom has been an outstanding part of our University since being appointed the 10th chancellor of the University of Waterloo in 2015.

Tom and his wife Toby have supported the University of Waterloo over the years in countless ways, from gifting a building to the David Johnston Research & Technology Park in 2012 to supporting the David Johnston International Experience Awards, the Games Institute and Tom’s instrumental role in establishing the Stratford campus.

It has been an honour to have Tom as our Chancellor and I look forward to continue to work with him as a noted member of the Waterloo community. The search for our 11th Chancellor is currently underway.
