We are now in the swing of the holiday season and over the past week, four of the busiest shopping days of the year took place between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. A lot of shopping took place around the world, but it’s also an important time of year to give back.
Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday, an internationally recognized day to support important organizations, like the University of Waterloo.
Over the last week I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with hundreds of alumni, partners, local officials and supporters in Hong Kong and discussing the impactful work our students, researchers and alumni are doing. None of that would be possible if it were not for those who believe in our community and chose to financially support our work.
Alumni Matching in Honour of 60th Anniversary
Each year, generous benefactors invest in Waterloo’s future by donating on Giving Tuesday. In honour of our 60th anniversary, we have recruited a group of alumni and community leaders who have committed to match donations made to the University during certain hours on Tuesday.
- 7:00-8:00AM - Cindy Forbes (BMath ’79), EVP & Chief Analytics Officer at Manulife and Chair of the Board of Governors
- 11:00-12:00PM - Steven Woods (PhD ’96), Senior Engineering Director & Site Lead for Google
- 5:00-6:00PM - Paul Salvini (BMath ’92) Chief Executive Officer of the Accelerator Centre
- 8:00-9:00PM - Jay Shah (BASc ’11) Director of Velocity
I hope you will consider donating to Waterloo during these hours so our generous alumni can double the impact of your gift.
The Positive Impact of Your Support
Our donors come from around the world making it clear that Waterloo’s impact extends far beyond Canadian borders. Whether it be supporting spaces where ideas begin, like the new Hagey Hub or helping students pursue their passions, the power of gifts towards Waterloo are immeasurable.
This Giving Tuesday take some time on campus to thank our donors. You will find students in the Dana Porter Library and the Davis Centre, with cards and cupcakes, ready to thank our supporters who are taking some time on Giving Tuesday to make an impact at Waterloo. If you won’t be on campus, take a second to send them a note on social media using #GivingTuesdayCA and tagging @uwaterlooalumni.
The University of Waterloo is a passionate and dedicated community. The support of Cindy, Steven, Paul, Jay and thousands of alumni and donors around the world are making it possible for our students and researchers to shape the future. I encourage you to continue our tradition of community support on Giving Tuesday and donate, especially during one of the four hours where our generous alumni will double the impact of your contribution.
