As countless people across Canada and around the world continue to mourn the tragedy in Saskatchewan last Friday evening involving the Humboldt Broncos hockey team, I too grieve with them. The devastating accident has had a profound impact on the hockey community, sports community, Canada and the world.
As a show of support for the victims of this tragic accident and their families and friends, I would like to encourage the University of Waterloo community to participate in the cross-Canada Jersey Day campaign on Thursday, April 12. Now is the time when we can show those in pain that they are not alone during this difficult week.
Sport has the power to bring people together like so few things can. Now is the time to come together and rally for those who are hurting. It doesn’t matter where you’re from, if you’ve ever picked up a hockey stick in your life or if you have no interest in sports. We can come together during these difficult times and remind one another that pain and suffering can and will be met with camaraderie and hope.
Please join me Thursday in wearing a hockey or sports jersey for the Humboldt Broncos, our Warriors who call Saskatchewan home and all those who continue to grieve.
