I am pleased to share some preliminary work on the core elements of our 2020-2025 Strategic Plan: the Mission, Vision and Values. These elements have been developed with your valuable input from extensive consultations in fall 2018. They reflect the feedback we heard and are being shared with University leadership for input.

I invite you to review these preliminary components of the 2020-2025 Strategic Plan, as we continue to develop and refine the goals, objectives and key targets for the plan. These components will be considered draft until formal approval by the Board of Governors in October. I encourage leaders from across our University to share this information with staff, students and faculty in tangible ways that relate to your environment. I encourage you to think about how we can use these elements to further differentiate Waterloo’s scholarship and research while creating a dynamic learning environment and caring community for all.

2020-2025 Strategic Plan: Mission, Vision and Values

Our mission, established in The University of Waterloo Act, remains the same: “The University of Waterloo mission is to advance learning and knowledge through teaching, research, and scholarship, nationally and internationally, in an environment of free expression and inquiry.” (The University of Waterloo Act). The University is also signatory to the Magna Charta Universitatum.

Our vision: We are building on our unconventional foundation by reimagining three broad areas that will position Waterloo to lead the future of education, research for impact, and building community. These three themes are animated by a proposed vision statement that includes the broadest spectrum of innovation — from imagination to impact. Waterloo: Connecting imagination with impact for a better world.

Our values: We exemplify our values in large and small ways every day through research, teaching and learning. At Waterloo, we will be guided by our nimble culture and our shared connection to the human values of curiosity, courage, engagement and belonging.

As we refine our goals and objectives, please continue to visit our Strategic Plan Bridge to 2020 website to keep updated about our next steps and read more about the proposed vision and values. The full plan will be developed over the spring and summer 2019, with input and direction from deans and other senior leadership. It will be presented to the Senate and Board of Governors for approval in October 2019.
