Warm welcome as the fall term beckons: August in review

The anticipation is building! There is something so special about September on campus: a fresh injection of bright young minds, and the overwhelming sense of endless possibility.

As preparation continues for Orientation week, let me extend our entire university’s sincere thanks to our hundreds of staff and volunteers. Orientation is a massive effort that requires co-ordination and teamwork across all six faculties and our entire campus community – students, faculty, and staff.

Celebrating Canada, breakthrough research; remembering Andrei Anghel: July in review

Our 30th Canada Day celebration was a smashing success, thanks to the hard work of our community relations and events team, our Federation of Students, over one hundred volunteers, and a broad range of staff from across campus.

This event was an outstanding way to celebrate Canada’s confederation 147 years ago, and to show our gratitude and pride in all that it has become.

Celebrating convocation, community & Canada: June in review

June was a momentous month for the University of Waterloo on many levels. To begin with, Convocation is without a doubt one of the most refreshing, rejuvenating, and meaningful events of the year, and Spring Convocation 2014 was no different.

From global to local, Waterloo’s profile grows: May in review

Both at home and abroad, May has been an exciting month for Waterloo.

As you know, building our international profile and prominence is an important part of our Strategic Plan. In pursuit of that goal, I led a delegation of Waterloo administrators and researchers to visit some of our key partners in China this month and the results have been excellent.

Waterloo leads in innovation and education: April in review

First things first: congratulations to our students who have just finished the Winter 2014 academic term, and to all faculty and staff for making it possible.

I wish each and every one of you the best as you head into a co-op job, a spring-time academic term, or other opportunities. And of course, a special congratulations to all students who have just completed their degrees from the University of Waterloo. I’ll see you in June!

Waterloo springs forward from winter's chill: March in review

I suppose I should start with an apology.

When I last wrote to you in this space, on February 28, I concluded my article with this sentiment:

“Thank you for keeping at your work and studies during such a long and cold winter. The next time I write to you Spring will have sprung!”

Technically true, sure, but in retrospect a little misleading. In any event, you’d never know the winter blues were at work at the University of Waterloo. March has been an extraordinary month!

Celebrating success abroad and at home: February in review

Welcome to the end of the last full month of winter. You’ve made it!

I think the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi helped us all to power through. What a performance by Canada’s athletes! Our competitors brought home a lot of hardware – only one medal less than our total haul from the Vancouver Olympics. And it sure didn’t hurt that Canada dominated in our national sports of curling and hockey.

A great start to 2014: January in review

I hope that, like me, you’re finding 2014 is off to an outstanding start.

It was a pleasure to partner with FEDS in welcoming students to campus during Winter Welcome Week. Our President’s Lunch event was well-attended and enjoyed by all. Thanks to the many of you who participated, and for my administration colleagues who helped to serve.

Campaigns, connections, and community: November in review

First and foremost, congratulations to our entire campus on our successful United Way Campaign!

Let me extend a big thank you to all of those who organized and donated to this excellent cause. As I mentioned in my message to campus on Wednesday, we surpassed our fundraising goal of $240,000, which represents about 5% of United Way’s fundraising goal for the entire region of Waterloo.

Celebrating our impact: October in review

In about an hour from now, the first graduands of Fall Convocation 2013 will cross the stage, taking their place in the world as alumni of the University of Waterloo.
