Community of Practice: Rowing in the Same Direction: Creating a positive team that gets the project done

In this workshop, we will discuss how successful project teams are created. We will review tips and strategies to address common challenges in establishing and managing project teams. Participants will have an opportunity to brainstorm with their colleagues on how to address some real-world project management scenarios.

Community of Practice: Organizational Change Management

Presenters: Tara Hillis, Wendy Hague, and Samantha Murray

Change is happening all over the University. If you are a part of a change initiative and/or project, you'll want to join us for an interactive session on planning for organizational change. You'll have a chance to learn about the importance of change management in achieving project outcomes as well as the tools and techniques for managing change. There will also be an opportunity to apply the tools and techniques to a situation. We will let you know about some resources you can use to manage change and we will answer your questions about change.

Community of Practice: Project Sponsorship

Research from the Project Management Institute (PMI) shows that having actively engaged executive sponsors is the top driver of project success. At this month’s PPM Community of Practice we’ll discuss the role of a project sponsor. We’ll have at least one project sponsor on hand to share their perspective of project sponsorship at the University and also to provide insight into how a project manager can help a project sponsor be most effective.

Community of Practice: Framing decision making

Presenters: Daryl Dore, Information Systems & Technology (IST)

The speed and quality of decision making is critical to the success of all projects; yet achieving timely decisions can be challenging.  In this session Daryl will review some of the practical approaches and techniques that he has found helpful to facilitate and make decisions.

The discussion will include practical exercises and discussion of how to:

  • Properly define the decision that needs to be made
  • Consider the roles involved in providing input and making a decision
  • Structure the analysis of project teams surrounding a decision
  • Work with sponsors and committees to get timely decisions
