UW Psychology Study featured in CBC News

The University of Waterloo will take part in a five-year study on e-cigarettes to determine the impact of regulations in different parts of the world. 

"It's extraordinarily important for us to understand the factors that are driving people to smoke, and what we can do through policies and regulations to reduce that amount globally," said Geoffrey Fong, a professor of psychology and public health at the Ontario university.

Psychology Graduate Kathy Hay Celebrates 2021 Alumni Achievement Award

Kathy Hay earned her BA with a major in Psychology in 1998 — but it wasn’t a straight line from start to finish. Beginning her undergrad studies in 1979, she paused university to pursue a career in banking. Nearly 20 years later she completed her degree through Waterloo’s distance learning option. Now as a former banker, Kathy has brought a strategic and business lens to her roles in the not-for-profit charitable sector.

Department of Psychology Researchers Awarded $10 Million U.S. for Global Tobacco Study

Geoffrey Fong, founder and chief principal investigator of the ITC Project, is co-leading the grant’s national cohort studies of adult smokers, vapers, and dual users (for example, those who both smoke and vape) in the U.S., Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea—countries that have very different approaches to cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and other new nicotine products, such as heated tobacco products.

UW Psychology professor Geoffrey Fong among the most cited researchers in the world

Geoffrey T. Fong is an acclaimed psychologist whose research focuses on combining psychological theories and research methods with traditional epidemiological survey methods to evaluate the impact of tobacco control policies on entire populations in countries. He is the founder and Chief Principal Investigator of the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project and a member of the Royal Society of Canada, Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and the Association for Psychological Science.
