Professor John Hirdes receives Diamond Jubilee medal

John Hirdes, Professor in the School of Public Health and Health Systems, and Ontario Home Care Research and Knowledge Exchange Chair, has been honoured with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal for his significant contributions to home and community care.

The commemorative medal, created to mark the 60th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, provides a tangible way recognize those Canadians who, like Her Majesty, have dedicated themselves to service to family, community and country.

Study shows plain cigarette packages reduce appeal of smoking

A new study has discredited the tobacco industry's assertion that there is no proof plain packaging on cigarette packs reduces the appeal of smoking.

Scientists from Canada, the United States and Brazil conducted a study of 640 young Brazilian women to determine if cigarettes had the same appeal when presented in plain packaging.

More than two of every three Nunavut Inuit smoke daily despite the increased risks to these smokers of developing tuberculosis, lung cancer and other illnesses, along with the high cost of a daily tobacco habit, which can range up to $6,000 a year for an individual smoker.
