Wednesday, March 14, 2018

Note: the deadline for submissions has been extended to Monday, March 19, 2018 at 11:59 p.m.

The Hi5 Challenge is a competition that aims to encourage high school students to develop creative solutions to pressing health issues through the use of information technology. This is a great opportunity for students in grade 11 and 12 interested in healthcare, technology, or business. This competition is a collaboration between the Health Data Science Lab (Professor Joon Lee) and the ARCH Lab (Professor Mark Ferro). This is the second year of the challenge.

This year's theme is Mental Health. Students are challenged to describe the issue of depression in young Canadians and propose a solution on how to utilize information technology to prevent, monitor, manage, and treat depression among adolescents. Information technology is defined as any technology that is used for storing, retrieving, processing, and/or sending information. Students may participate individually or in pairs.

Prizes include an Activity Tracker (First Place Prize), $50 Chapters Indigo gift card (Second Place Prize), Hi5 Challenge plaques, prize packs from the School of Public Health and Health Systems, an invitation to visit the university for the award ceremony and lunch with the Hi5 Challenge team (First, Second and Third Place).

Competition participants should prepare a submission following the criteria outlined and email it to the competition team at hi5.challenge@uwaterloo.ca.
