Master of Health Evaluation: Combining knowledge and practice together in the workplace

As an East Coast native, Rick Pittman worked in various positions within the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador before landing in the Department of Health and Community Services. Now as a Policy, Planning & Research Analyst, he reviews national health reports and works with a dedicated team to provide policy support to government officials. During his time in the Master of Health Evaluation program, Rick struck a balance between full-time work and online studies, which he attributed to a strong work ethic and a passion for learning.

Rick was no stranger to online learning, as he had also completed part of his Bachelor of Commerce online. In addition to obtaining a Diploma in Computer Studies (Management Information Systems), he completed the Master of Health Evaluation (MHE) program at the University of Waterloo in 2019, where he gained the skills and experience to grow his career in an emerging field. As an enthusiastic online learner, Rick feels that the key to being successful is practicing self-discipline and working efficiently. In his view, the MHE program is ideal for working professionals because it offers the convenience of being able to study anywhere with a laptop and Wi-Fi access. During his studies, Rick was grateful for his professors who were incredibly accommodating and responsive to questions, making sure that students are supported even from a distance.

“Evaluation is an emerging field, with tremendous opportunity for personal and career growth, which is really exciting.”

Making connections between his courses and his daily work was a source of motivation for Rick. A key pillar for the MHE program is to tie knowledge to practice; Rick experienced this first hand. Aspiring to teach online one day, Rick believes that gaining experience is the key to getting where you want to be.
