Master of Health Evaluation: Combining knowledge and practice together in the workplace

As an East Coast native, Rick Pittman worked in various positions within the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador before landing in the Department of Health and Community Services. Now as a Policy, Planning & Research Analyst, he reviews national health reports and works with a dedicated team to provide policy support to government officials. Currently, Rick has a perfect balance of full-time work and online studies, which he attributes to a strong work ethic and a passion for learning.

Rick is no stranger to online learning, as he had also completed part of a Bachelor of Commerce online. In addition to obtaining a Diploma in Computer Studies (Management Information Systems), he is currently completing the Master of Health Evaluation (MHE) program at the University of Waterloo, where he is gaining the skills and experience to advance his career in an emerging field. Being an advocate for online programs, Rick finds that the key to being successful is being self-disciplined and working efficiently. In his view, the MHE program is ideal for working professionals because it offers the convenience of being able to study anywhere with a laptop and Wi-Fi access. Rick is also grateful for his professors who are incredibly accommodating and responsive to questions, making sure that students are supported even if they are far, far away.

“Evaluation is an emerging field, with tremendous opportunity for personal and career growth, which is really exciting.”

Making connections between his courses and his daily work motivates Rick to pursue more and learn more about public health and health systems. An evaluation concept that he read in a textbook the night before might be relevant in an upcoming project at the office, and that is one of the many ways that the MHE program can be tailored to tie knowledge and practice together. As he aspires to teach online one day, Rick believes that gathering more experiences in life will ultimately get you to where you want to be.
