SUMMARY:Spin^h and further generalisations of spin
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:MICHAEL ALBANESE\, DEPARTMENT OF PURE MATHEMATICS\, UNIVERSITY
OF\nWATERLOO\n\nThe question of which manifolds are spin or spin^c has a s
imple and\ncomplete answer. In this talk we address the same question for
the\nlesser known spin^h manifolds which have appeared in geometry and\nph
ysics in recent decades. We determine the first obstruction to being\nspin
^h and use this to provide an example of an orientable manifold\nwhich is
not spin^h. The existence of such an example leads us to\nconsider an infi
nite sequence of generalised spin structures. In doing\nso\, we determine
an answer to the following question: is there an\ninteger k such that ever
y manifold embeds in a spin manifold with\ncodimension at most k?\n\nThis
is joint work with Aleksandar Milivojevic.\n\nMC 5417
