Welcome to Graduate Studies

The Department offers exciting and challenging programs leading to MMath and PhD degrees. A broad range of courses are offered, covering the spectrum of Pure Mathematics. As well, students are welcome to take relevant courses in other departments in the University. All students work one-on-one with their supervisor to prepare a research paper or thesis for their master's degree, and to be guided through the process of doing original research for their PhD. Please take a look at the detailed descriptions of our MMath and PhD programs and courses.

Career prospects

Each program is tailored to the needs and interests of the individual students. Many of our graduates become university mathematics professors. Some study advanced mathematics as a foundation for more applied studies. Other common careers for our graduates are in the computer industry, teaching at the high school or college level, or in business, particularly the financial industry. There is no shortage of intellectually rewarding jobs for Pure Mathematics graduates.

Research interests

With over 80 faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students in the department, there is a huge level of research activity covering a wide range of topics in pure mathematics. Our web site also contains information on current research interests. Additional information can be found on individual faculty members' web sites. There are regular department seminars in analysis, geometry and topology, number theory, algebra, logic and universal algebra, as well as a colloquium series in which we invite highly regarded mathematicians to speak about their work to a general mathematical audience. The graduate students also run a popular graduate student colloquium in which graduate students present their work to other students.

The department has a cooperative, collegial atmosphere and graduate students are encouraged to interact fully in department life.

Information for new graduate students

Graduate students are provided with excellent financial support through a combination of teaching assistantships, research assistantships and internal scholarships and awards. The cost of living in Waterloo is quite reasonable. Please take a look at the information on our application procedure.
