“S-arithmetic groups and quantum computing”

The operations of a quantum computer are often represented by unitary transformations on a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. This has inspired quantum computer scientists to investigate finitely generated groups of unitary transformations. The group generated by rotations around the coordinate axes in R3 is of particular interest, and I will describe joint work with Simon Forest, David Gosset, and Vadym Kliuchnikov that relates certain finitely generated subgroups of SO(3) with subgroups of SO(3) having entries in a specific field.
