SUMMARY:PhD Student Research Seminar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:PAT NAYLOR\, DEPARTMENT OF PURE MATHEMATICS\, UNIVERSITY OF WAT
ERLOO\n\n\"Diagrammatic Methods in Topology\"\n\nA recent tool for underst
anding 4-manifolds is something called a\n“trisection.” These have the
interesting advantage of changing\nproblems about 4-manifolds to problems
of combinatorics on surfaces.\nThis talk will be an (accessible) tourist
’s guide to some background\nand similar ideas from low(er) dimensional
topology: Heegaard\nsplittings and diagrams. Time permitting\, we’ll als
o introduce a\ntrisection and discuss some recent developments.
