SUMMARY:Joint Graduate Student Colloquium
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:PATRICK NAYLOR\, DEPARTMENT OF PURE MATHEMATICS\, UNIVERSITY OF
WATERLOO\n\n\"Is any knot not the unknot?\"\n\nEver wanted to learn somet
hing about knots? This is your chance! We'll\ntalk about some basics of kn
ot theory\, including how to prove some\nintuitively `obvious' but mathema
tically tricky results. Along the\nway\, we'll see knot coloring invariant
 s\, polynomial invariants\, and\nmore. We'll even show how to produce a kn
otted surface: a sphere\n($S^2$) in $\\mathbb{R}^4$ that is `knotted'. Thi
s talk will be very\naccessible and will include many cool pictures.
