SUMMARY:Joint PM/C&O Grad Colloquium
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:PATRICK NAYLOR\, DEPARTMENT OF PURE MATHEMATICS\, UNIVERSITY OF
WATERLOO\n\n“Is any knot not the unknot?”\n\nEver wanted to learn som
ething about knots? This is your chance! We'll\ntalk about some basics of
knot theory\, including how to prove some\nintuitively `obvious' but mat
hematically tricky results. Along the\nway\, we'll see knot coloring inv
ariants\, polynomial invariants\, and\nmore. We'll even show how to produc
e a knotted surface: a sphere\n($S^2$) in $\\mathbb{R}^4$ that is `knott
ed'. This talk will be very\naccessible and will include many cool picture
s.
