SUMMARY:Colloquium
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:STEVEN RAYAN\, UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN\n\n“MODULI SPACES A
ND QUANTUM MATTER: FROM MATERIALS TO PURE\nMATHEMATICS AND BACK\"\n\nThe a
dvent of topological materials\, a form of physical matter with\nunusual b
ut useful properties\, has brought with it unexpected new\nconnections bet
ween physics and pure mathematics. As the name\nsuggests\, topology has pl
ayed a significant role in understanding and\nclassifying these materials.
In this talk\, I will offer a brief look\nat a vast extension to this sto
ry\, arising from my work with various\ncollaborators over the last three
 years\, that sees complex algebraic\ngeometry — in particular\, Riemann
surfaces and moduli spaces\nassociated to them — being used to anticipat
e new models of quantum\nmatter. There will be lots of pictures.\n\nMC 550
