SUMMARY:Special Colloquium
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:MYRTO MAVRAKI\, UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO MISSISSAUGA\n\n\"DYNAMICS
 \, NUMBER THEORY\, AND UNLIKELY INTERSECTIONS\"\n\nFruitful interactions b
etween arithmetic geometry and dynamical\nsystems have emerged in recent
years. In this talk I will illustrate\nhow insights from complex dynamics
can be employed to study\nproblems from arithmetic geometry. And converse
ly how arithmetic\ngeometry can be used in the study of dynamical systems
. The motivating\nquestions are inspired by a recurring phenomenon in arit
hmetic\ngeometry known as 'unlikely intersections' and conjectures of Pink
  and\nZilber therein. More specifically\, I will discuss work toward\nunde
rstanding the distribution of preperiodic points in subvarieties\nof famil
ies of rational maps. \n\nMC 5479
