 NTUM MARKOV SEMIGROUPS\"\n\nQuantum Markov semigroups describe the time ev
 olution of the operators\nin a von Neumann algebra corresponding to an ope
 n quantum system. Of\nparticular interest are so-called symmetric semigrou
 ps. Given a\nfaithful state\, one can define the GNS- and KMS-inner produc
 t on the\nvon Neumann algebra\, and a semigroup is GNS- or KMS-symmetric i
 f it is\nself-adjoint w.r.t. the inner product. GNS-symmetry implies\nKMS-
 symmetry\, and both coincide if the state is a trace. It was shown\nin 200
 3 that the generator of a tracially symmetric quantum Markov\nsemigroup ca
 n be written as the 'square' of a derivation\, i.e. d*\nafter d\, where d 
 is a derivation to a Hilbert bimodule. This result\nhas proven to be very 
 influential in many different directions. In\nthis talk\, we will look at 
 this problem in the case that our state is\nnot tracial. We will start by 
 discussing how a computer can be used to\ndecide whether such a derivation
  exists in finite dimensions\, and work\nour way up to a general result on
  KMS-symmetric quantum Markov\nsemigroups. This is joint work with Melchio
