SUMMARY:Height Study Seminar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Research Area: Algebraic Geometry/Number Theory\n\nCynthia Dai\
n\n\"Introduction to Naive Height\"\n\nIn this seminar\, we will be focusi
ng on three results: Mordell-Weil\ntheorem\, Falting theorem\, and potenti
ally Vojta conjecture. If time\npermits\, we will also try to cover Manin'
s conjecture for toric\nvarieties. We will start slow and spend a one or t
wo talks on naive\nheights on projective space\, then define Weil heights
for projective\nvarieties\, and study their properties. After this\, we wi
ll focus on\nabelian varieties\, and once we are familar with those object
s\, we\nintroduce Neron-Tate heights\, and finally prove the first main re
sult\nwe want to cover (actually\, I think this will be all we can do this
 \nterm).\n\nFor today's talk\, I will review some algebraic number theory\
 , then\ndefine Naive heights. \n\nMC 5417
