SUMMARY:Differential Geometry Working Seminar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Paul Marriott\n\n\"Statistics and Geometry: We don't t
alk any more.\"\n\nGeorge Bernard Shaw once said Britain and America are t
wo counties\nseparated by a common language. Perhaps the same can be said
for\nStatistics and Geometry. This talk gives a high-level overview of a\n
recent graduate course which explored the relationship between\nStatistics
and Geometry. It looks at what the disciplines have in\ncommon but also w
here there are points of substantive difference. The\ntalk will review the
long history of geometric tools finding a place\nin statistical practice
and will highlight modern developments using\nideas from convex\, differen
tial and algebraic geometry and showing\napplications in Neuroscience.\n\n
