 We investigate various compatible metrics that a Polish group admits.\nBy 
 Birkhoff-Kakutani\, every Polish group admits a compatible\nleft-invariant
  metric\, and by being a Polish space\, there is also a\ncompatible metric
  which is complete. We discuss the relationship\nbetween these metrics\, a
 nd introduce the class of CLI Polish groups\,\nthose Polish groups which a
 dmit a single compatible metric which is\nboth left invariant and complete
