SUMMARY:Number Theory Seminar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:KEIRA GUNN (UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY)\n\nSome Problems on the Dyna
mics of Positive Characteristic Tori.\n\nThe real (or characteristic zero)
torus is simply R/Z\, or the \"decimal\npart\" of any real number with op
erations of addition and integer\nmultiplication.  With the positive char
acteristic integers defined to\nbe polynomials with coefficients from a fi
nite field\, and the positive\ncharacteristic reals their Laurent series c
ounterparts\, we can\nsimilarly construct the positive characteristic tori
(each torus\ndependent on the choice of field).  At first glance there a
re many\nsimilarities to how operations work in both positive and zero\nch
aracteristic\, but these similarities break down quickly upon further\nins
pection\, particularly from a view of dynamics on the tori.\n\nIn this tal
k\, we will discuss results on some orbital sets and\ndynamics formulae on
the positive characteristic tori\, including the\nArtin-Mazur zeta functi
on and analogous hypothesis for Furstenberg's\nOrbital Theorem.\n\nMC5403
