SUMMARY:Pure Math Dept Colloquium
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:GREGORY G. SMITH\, QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY\n\nSums of Squares and Pr
ojective Geometry\n\nA multivariate real polynomial is nonnegative if its
value at any real\npoint is greater than or equal to zero.  These special
polynomials\nplay a central role in many branches of mathematics includin
 g\nalgebraic geometry\, optimization theory\, and dynamical systems. \nHo
 wever\, it is very difficult\, in general\, to decide whether a given\npol
ynomial is nonnegative.  In this talk\, we will review some\nclassical me
thods for certifying that a polynomial is nonnegative. \nWe will then pre
sent novel certificates in some important cases. This\ntalk is based on jo
 int work with Grigoriy Blekherman\, Rainer Sinn\, and\nMauricio Velasco.\n
