SUMMARY:Geometry and Topology Seminar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:CANDACE BETHEA\, DUKE UNIVERSITY\n\nThe local equivariant degre
e and equivariant rational curve counting\n\nI will talk about joint work
with Kirsten Wickelgren on defining a\nglobal and local degree in stable e
quivariant homotopy theory. We\nconstruct the degree of a proper G-map bet
ween smooth G-manifolds and\nshow a local to global property holds. This a
llows one to use the\ndegree to compute topological invariants\, such as t
he equivariant\nEuler characteristic and Euler number. I will discuss the
construction\nof the equivariant degree and local degree\, and I will give
an\napplication to counting orbits of rational plane cubics through 8\nge
neral points invariant under a finite group action on CP^2. This\ngives th
e first equivariantly enriched rational curve count\, valued in\nthe repre
sentation ring and Burnside ring. I will also show this\nequivariant enric
hment recovers a Welchinger invariant in the case\nwhen Z/2 acts on CP^2 b
 y conjugation.\n\nMC 5417
