SUMMARY:Number Theory Seminar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:AGNIVA DASGUPTA\, UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT DALLAS\n\nSecond Momen
 t of GL(3) L-functions\n\nIn this talk\, I will discuss our recent result\
, joint with Wing Hong\nLeung and Matthew Young\, on the second moment of
GL(3) L-functions on\nthe critical line. Moments of L-functions on the cri
tical line have\nbeen studied for over a hundred years now\, and still rem
ains a very\nactive field of research in number theory. The second moment
of GL(3)\nL-functions has proved to be especially difficult\, and only in
the\nlast couple of years have we seen some progress on this. Building on\
ntop of these works\, we are able to obtain a strong upper bound for\nthis
moment. This allows us to deduce some nice corollaries including\nan impr
ovement on the error term in the Rankin-Selberg problem\, and on\ncertain
 subconvexity bounds for GL(3) x GL(2) and GL(3) L-functions.\nAs a byprodu
ct of the method of proof\, we also obtain an improved\nestimate for an av
erage of shifted convolution sums of GL(3) Fourier\ncoefficients. \n\nMC
