SUMMARY:Differential Geometry Working Seminar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:SPIRO KARIGIANNIS\, UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO\n\nInfinitesimal def
ormations of G-structures\n\nI will introduce the setting of G-structures
on an oriented Riemannian\nn-manifold\, where G is a closed Lie subgroup o
f SO(n). These can be\nunderstood in terms of global sections of the SO(n)
bundle which is\nthe quotient of the SO(n)-prinicipal bundle of oriented
orthonormal\nframes by the free action of G. We will define the intrinsic
 torsion\nof a G-structure\, and explain how to describe infinitesimal\ndef
ormations of G-structures. If time permits\, we will discuss a\nDirichlet
energy type of functional on the space of G-structures\,\nwhose critical p
oints are called harmonic G-structures. This condition\nincludes the torsi
on-free G-structures but is more general. These\nideas were developed rece
 ntly by Fowdar\, Loubeau\, Moreno\, Sa Earp\nbuilding on earlier work in t
 he G2 and Spin(7) cases by myself from\n2006-2007.\n\nMC 5479
