SUMMARY:Tilings and Tilability Learning Seminar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:LEIGH FOSTER\, UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO\n\nIntroduction to planar
tilings\n\nFrom tangrams to tessellations to brick pavers\, we have many
real life\nexamples of tilings of a planar region. In this learning semina
r\, we\nwill get a gentle introduction to the math behind these ideas\, an
d\nover the course of the term will be able to answer the questions:\nGive
n a set of tiles\, can we determine if a given region is tilable?\nIf so\,
do we have more than one way of laying out the tiles? How can\nwe know wh
en a tiling does not exist? To answer these questions\, we'll\nuse techniq
ues including counting and coloring arguments\, height\nfunctions from a m
ore topological point of view\, and a combinatorial\ngroup-theoretic appro
ach\, among others. No previous knowledge is\nneeded\, and no outside work
is required! Come and listen and ask\nquestions - everyone is welcome\, a
nd interruptions are expected. \n\nFor our first meeting\, we will discuss
the basics of tilings. What\ndoes it mean to tile a region\, and what are
some ways that these\nquestions arise in mathematics? \n\nMC 5403
