SUMMARY:Pure Math Department Colloquium
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:ANDY ZUCKER\, UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO\n\nMinimal dynamics of top
ological groups: A set-theoretic perspective\n\nThis talk explores the min
imal actions of topological groups on\ncompact spaces. By a classical resu
lt of Ellis\, every topological\ngroup admits a largest such action called
the universal minimal flow.\nHere\, we take a set-theoretic perspective a
nd ask how the universal\nminimal flow can change when considering differe
nt models of set\ntheory. In particular\, we will take the opportunity to
give a gentle\nintroduction to set-theoretic forcing. Our main result is a
\ncharacterization of those topological groups for which the universal\nmi
nimal flow is absolute. Joint work with Gianluca Basso.\n\nMC 5501
