SUMMARY:Geometry & Topology Seminar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:YIDI WANG\, UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO\n\nLocal-global principles o
n stacky curves and its application in\nsolving generalized Fermat equatio
ns. \n\nThe primitive solutions of certain generalized Fermat equations\,
\ni.e.\, \nDiophantine equations of the form Ax^p+By^q = Cz^r\, can be st
udied\nas \nintegral points on certain stacky curves. In a recent paper b
y\nBhargava and \nPoonen\, an explicit example of such a curve of genus 1
/2 violating \nlocal-global principle for integral points was given. Howe
ver\, a\ngeneral \ndescription of stacky curves failing the local-global
principle is \nunknown. In this talk\, I will discuss our work on finding
 the\nprimitive \nsolutions to equation of the form when (p\, q\, r) = (2
\,2\,n) by studying\nlocal-global principles for integral points on stacky
curves\nconstructed from such equations. \nThe talk is based on a joint
project with Juanita Duque-Rosero\, \nChristopher Keyes\, Andrew Kobin\,
Manami Roy and Soumya Sankar. \n\nMC 5417
