 n be said about maps\nthat are \"almost\" isometries (in a precise sense)
 —must they be close\nto true isometries? In this talk\, I will survey th
 is question from its\norigins in the 1960s to recent developments\, and di
 scuss its\napplications to non-Euclidean elasticity\, where one seeks the 
 “most\nisometric” immersion even when exact isometric immersions do no
