SUMMARY:Number Theory Seminar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:PAUL POLLACK\, UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA\n\nHow nonunique is your f
actorization?\n\nNumber theorists learn early on not to take unique factor
 ization for\ngranted. In 1980\, R.J. Valenza introduced the \"elasticity
” of an\nintegral domain as a means of measuring how far away the domain
is\nfrom possessing unique factorization. I will survey what is known\nab
out elasticity of rings of number theoretic interest. Particular\nattentio
n will be paid to recent work of the speaker on elasticity of\norders in q
uadratic fields. Much of this is joint with Steve Fan (UGA)\nand Enrique T
 revino (Lake Forest).\n\nMC 5417
