SUMMARY:Algebraic geometry working seminar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:FRANCISCO VILLACIS\, UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO\n\nAlgebraic Geomet
ry Working Seminar\n\nIn this talk\, we will explore the \"marriage of mat
roid theory and\nconvex set theory\" initiated by I.M. Gelfand and R. MacP
herson back in\nthe 80s. In their seminal work\, they construct a bijectio
 n between\nprojective configurations of n points in P^(k-1) and C*^n-orbit
 s of\nthe Grassmannian of n-k-planes in C^n. This gives a one-to-one\ncorr
espondence between representable matroids over C and certain\nconvex polyh
edra\, which in turn gives two equivalent decompositions of\nthe Grassmann
ian into strata. This decomposition is also equivalent to\nthe decompositi
on of the Grassmannian into intersections of translates\nof certain Shuber
 t cells\, as shown by Gelfand\, Goresky\, MacPherson and\nSerganova a few
years later. We will explore these three\ndecompositions and talk about re
 lated results.\n\nMC 5403
