SUMMARY:Pure Math Colloquium
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:ANTON BERNSHTEYN\, UCLA\n\n_Minimal subdynamics and its applica
tions_\n\nTopological dynamics is the study of continuous group actions. T
he\nclassical and best understood cases are when the acting group is\neith
er $\\mathbb{Z}$ or $\\mathbb{R}$\, while the general theory remains\nfar
less clear. In particular\, the tools to approach the dynamics of\nnon-Abe
lian discrete groups have only begun to emerge in recent years\,\nin part
thanks to the arrival of powerful techniques from\ncombinatorics and descr
iptive set theory. In this talk\, I will\nillustrate this confluence of id
eas by discussing the following very\nbasic problem: If $\\Delta$ is a sub
group of $\\Gamma$\, does $\\Gamma$\nhave a free continuous action on a co
mpact Hausdorff space without\nnontrivial closed $\\Delta$-invariant subse
ts? This talk is based on\njoint work with Joshua Frisch.\n\nMC 5501
