SUMMARY:Joint Waterloo-McMaster Model Theory Seminar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:CHRIS SCHULZ\, POSTDOC AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO\n\n_A Cobh
am theorem for scalar multiplication_\n\nThe famous Cobham-Semenov theorem
 states that for k\, l > 1\nmultiplicatively independent\, if a subset of
N^d is definable both\nusing the base-k representations of its elements an
d using the base-l\nrepresentations\, then it is definable from only the a
ddition function\non N. We present an analogous result in the real case: f
or alpha\, beta\nquadratic irrationals from distinct field extensions of Q
\, if a subset\nof R^d is definable by expanding the real ordered group wi
th Z both\nusing the multiplication by alpha and using the multiplication
by\nbeta\, then it is definable from only the real ordered group with Z\ni
tself. This talk is based on joint work with Philipp Hieronymi and\nSven M
anthe.\n\nMC 5403
