SUMMARY:Differential Geometry Working Seminar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:AMANDA PETCU\, UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO\n\n_Stability and Lyapuno
v Functions_\n\nWhen working with a nonlinear system of differential equat
 ions\,\nfinding explicit\, closed-form solutions can be difficult. A tool
in\nsuch situations is to determine the stability of the equilibrium\npoin
ts of the system. This analysis allows us to predict the long-term\nbehavi
or of the system by examining its trajectories and how they\nbehave near a
n equilibrium point: specifically\, do they remain bounded\nin some compac
t set\, converge to the point\, or escape to infinity? In\nthis talk\, we
will discuss Lyapunov's Direct Method\, a technique that\nallows us to det
ermine the stability of an equilibrium point without\nexplicitly solving t
 he differential equations. \n\nMC 5403
