DESCRIPTION:YUNQING TANG\, BERKELEY\n\n_The arithmetic of power series and 
 applications to irrationality_\n\nWe will discuss a new approach to prove 
 irrationality of certain\nperiods\, including the value at 2 of the Dirich
 let L-function\nassociated to the primitive quadratic character with condu
 ctor -3. Our\nmethod uses rational approximations from the literature and 
 we develop\na new framework to make use of these approximations. The key\n
 ingredient is an arithmetic holonomy theorem built upon earlier work\nby A
 ndré\, Bost\, Charles (and others) on arithmetic algebraization\ntheorems
  via Arakelov theory. This is joint work with Frank Calegari\nand Vesselin
