SUMMARY:Celebration of Life for William Gilbert

DESCRIPTION:It is with sadness that we announce our William Gilbert passed 
 away\,\nsurrounded by the love of his family on Saturday\, October 25th\, 
 2025\nat the age of 84 years.  Will was a faculty member in our departmen
 t\nfor many years\, retiring in 2004\, and has been a fixture at various\n
 department events since then.  Those of you who knew him will\nremember h
 is wry sense of humour and his cheerful demeanour.\n\nBorn in Exeter\, Eng
 land in March 1941\, Will's early years took him\nfrom the Devon countrysi
 de to Deep River\, Ontario—where his father\nCharles Gilbert was the lea
 d Nuclear Physicist at Canada's first\nnuclear reactor—before the family
  returned to England and settled in\nManchester. Will completed his underg
 raduate and master's degrees in\nmathematics at Cambridge University\, and
  to his father's\ndisappointment\, completed his PhD at Oxford University.
  A\ndistinguished mathematician and dedicated educator\, Will built a\nrem
 arkable academic career spanning nearly four decades at the\nUniversity of
  Waterloo. He joined the Department of Pure Mathematics\nas an Assistant P
 rofessor in 1968\, rising to full Professor and\nserving as Department Cha
 ir from 1995 to 1999 before becoming\nProfessor Emeritus in 2004.\n\nWill
 ’s scholarly contributions were significant and diverse\,\nexploring the
  elegant interplay between algebra and geometry. His\nresearch encompassed
  fractal geometry\, complex bases\, dynamical\nsystems\, and algebraic top
 ology. He authored several influential\ntextbooks\, including \"An Introdu
 ction to Mathematical Thinking\" and\n\"Modern Algebra with Applications\,
 \" shaping the minds of countless\nmathematics students. He has 54 publica
 tions to his name\, and his\nresearch is cited over 800 times according to
  ResearchGate. Throughout\nhis career\, he contributed to the study of mat
 hematics internationally\nthrough research and teaching sabbaticals in Aus
 tralia\, New Zealand\,\nand China\n\nBeyond the classroom and research lab
 \, Will embraced life as a quiet\,\npatient\, and caring man. He was known
  for his gentle presence\, warm\nsmile\, and wry sense of humour. Will had
  a lifelong love of British\ncomedy\, particularly Monty Python—several 
 members of which were his\ncontemporaries at Cambridge and Oxford. He was 
 an avid sailor\,\nenjoying his Laser and Albacore sailboats on Conestoga L
 ake. He was a\ndedicated skier\, enjoyed camping adventures\, travelled th
 e world\nextensively\, and cultivated a refined palate as a wine connoisse
 ur and\nmember of both the International Cellar Society and the Kitchener\
 nGerman Wine Society. He once owned an extensive wine collection that\nwas
  the envy of many. A passionate film enthusiast with a particular\nlove fo
 r world cinema\, he contributed reviews to the Internet Movie\nDatabase an
 d attended the Toronto International Film Festival\nfaithfully for decades
 .\n\nIn later years\, Will treasured time with his family\, completing jig
 saw\npuzzles and swimming. His grandchildren adored their Grandpa deeply\n
 and will forever hold close memories of his kindness\, intelligence\,\npat
 ience\, and the special bond they shared.\n\nHusband of Ruth Gilbert (née
  Hornig) for over 57 years. Loving father\nof Mandy Jean Ramirez (Jesse) a
 nd Peter Jay Gilbert (Farida).\nCherished grandfather of Zachary Ramirez\,
  Ethan Gilbert\, and Gavin\nGilbert. Dear big brother of Harry Gilbert (Aw
 n) of England and Eva\nSmart of Australia. Loving uncle of Holly Gilbert\,
  Judith Smart\,\nJonathan Smart\, and Jason Smart.\n\nPredeceased by his p
 arents\, nuclear physicist Charles Walton Gilbert\nand Irene Gilbert (née
  Gunn)\n\nCremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life open house will
