SUMMARY:Pure Math Colloquium
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:PATRICK NAYLOR\, MCMASTER UNIVERSITY \n\n_Doubling Gluck twists
_\n\nThe Gluck twist of an embedded 2-sphere in the 4-sphere is a\n4-manif
old that is homeomorphic but not obviously diffeomorphic to the\n4-sphere.
Despite considerable study\, these strange manifolds have\nremained a lon
g-standing source of potential counterexamples to the\nonly remaining case
of the Poincaré conjecture. In this talk\, I will\ngive an overview of t
 his conjecture\, a visual introduction to\n2-dimensional knot theory\, and
describe conditions that guarantee that\n(some) Gluck twists are standard
\, i.e.\, diffeomorphic to the 4-sphere.\nThis is based on joint work with
Dave Gabai and Hannah Schwartz.\n\nMC 5501
