SUMMARY:Geometry and Topology Seminar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:SERGEY GRIGORIAN\, UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS RIO GRANDE VALLEY\n\n_Ge
ometric structures determined by the 7-sphere_\n\nThe 7-sphere is remarkab
le not only for its rich topological and\nalgebraic properties but also fo
r the special geometric structures it\nencodes. In this talk\, we explore
how the symmetries and stabilizer\nsubgroups of Spin(7) acting on the 7-sp
here\, regarded as the set of\nunit octonions\, give rise to G2-structu
 res on 7-manifolds\,\nSU(3)-structures on 6-manifolds\, and SU(2)-structur
es on 5-manifolds.\nWe will trace how these structures arise naturally via
the inclusions\nof Lie groups and are reflected in the geometry of sphere
fibrations.\nThis perspective highlights the role of the 7-sphere as a un
ifying\nobject in special geometry in dimensions from 5 to 8.\n\nMC 5417
