SUMMARY:Pure math Grad colloquium
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:JACQUES GIDEON VAN WYK\, MCMASTER UNIVERSITY\n\n_A Lucky Game o
f Yahtzee Over Christmas_\n\nYahtzee is a game where you win points by rol
ling five dice into\nparticular patterns\, sort of like hands in Poker. Th
e roll which wins\nyou the most points\, and which is the hardest to get\,
is the Yahtzee\,\nthe game's namesake\, where all five die land on the sa
me digit.\n\nOver the Christmas holidays\, I played Yahtzee with some of m
y family\,\nand we had a game where we rolled five Yahtzees among five tea
ms in\none game. In our experience\, this felt like quite the lucky game\,
as\nmany games of Yahtzee end with no one rolling any Yahtzees at all.\n\
nIn this talk\, we're going to get to the bottom of how lucky we\nactually
were: I'll explain how Yahtzee is played\, we'll discuss some\nstrategies
you can employ to increase your chances at winning\, and\,\nassuming an o
ptimal strategy\, we'll figure out how likely it is to get\nat least five
Yahtzees in one game. \n\nMC 5479\n\n(Refreshments will start at 16:30)
