SUMMARY:Learning Seminar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:LEIGH FOSTER\, UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO\n\n_Learning Seminar on
lozenge tilings and the single dimer model_\n\nThe study of lozenge tiling
s and of the dimer model is a\nwell-established area of research\, going b
ack to the 1960's and\n\nstill subject to active research at present. (Som
 e references\, also\nshowing connections to other directions of research\,
\n\nare listed below.) We will start the learning seminar on this topic\nw
ith a series of three meetings giving an introduction\n\nto the dimer mode
l in its single-dimer version\, and considered on a\nfinite hexagonal grid
.\n\n--In the first meeting\, on January 27\, we will introduce the single
\ndimer model and we will discuss its connection to other\n\ncombinatorial
objects\, with particular emphasis on the connection\nbetween the dimer m
odel and the notion of \"stack of\n\nboxes\".\n\n--In the second meeting\,
on February 3\, we will discuss enumeration\nquestions related to the con
 figurations introduced\n\nin the preceding week.\n\n--The third meeting\,
on February 10\, will be open to requests from the\naudience. One potentia
l direction for this meeting\n\nwill be to look at some probabilistic resu
lts on random dimer\nconfigurations of a given shape\, as well as various
limit shape\n\nphenomena\, pointing to the study od some intriguing object
s called\n\"amoebas\".\n\nThe learning seminar is intended to continue aft
er the reading week\,\ncovering the more recent research topic of double-d
imer\n\nand more generally multiple-dimer models.\n\nThe seminar is addres
sed to all interested audiences\, with very few\nassumptions regarding bac
kground knowledge.\n\nCome\, listen and ask questions - everyone is welcom
 e\, and\ninterruptions are hoped for!\n\nMC 5403
