SUMMARY:Algebraic geometry working seminar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:CATHERINE ST-PIERRE\, UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO\n\n_Why does the S
pec functor not extend to non-commutative rings?_\n\nThe functor Spec\, wh
ich assigns to a commutative ring its prime\nspectrum\, plays a central ro
le in algebraicgeometry. A natural\nquestion is whether this construction
can be extended in a meaningful\nway tononcommutative rings. In this talk\
, we discuss the obstruction\nto the extension of the functor Spec to non-
commutative rings\npresented by Manuel L. Reyes\, showing that any functor
extending Spec\nand satisfyingreasonable compatibility conditions must co
llapse on\ncertain noncommutative rings\, such as matrix algebras$M_3(\\ma
 thbb C)$.\n\nMC 5417
