SUMMARY:Differential Geometry Working Seminar | Danial Ghamari | Higher Gau
 ge\nTheory
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:DANIAL GHAMARI (UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO) \n\n_Higher Gauge Theor
y_ \n\nOrdinary gauge theory describes the parallel transport of point\npa
rticles along paths using connections on principal bundles. Higher\ngauge
theory extends this framework to objects such as strings\, whose\nmotion s
weeps out surfaces. This extension requires a corresponding\ncategorificat
ion. \nAs long as time permits\, we will go through Baez and Schreiber (20
06)\,\nHigher Gauge Theory\, and develop the main ideas presented there. I
n\nparticular\, we will explain how Lie groups\, bundles\, and connections
 \nare replaced by Lie 2-groups\, principal 2-bundles\, and 2-connections.\
nWe will motivate this structure through surface holonomy and the\nobstruc
tion to describing nonabelian surface transport using ordinary\ngroups. We
will then outline the construction of path and surface\nholonomy as a 2-f
 unctor\, the local description of a 2-connection by\ndifferential forms (A
 ) and (B)\, and its relation to nonabelian gerbes.\nTime permitting\, we w
ill discuss why parametrization-independent\nsurface transport requires th
e vanishing of the fake curvature.   \nIn the likely case that we do not
manage to cover the entire paper\, we\nwill have follow-up talks in which
we continue developing the theory. \nMC 5417
