SUMMARY:Algebraic Geometry Working Seminar | Francisco Villacis | Principal
 \nMinors and Absolute Values
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:FRANCISCO VILLACIS (UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO) \n\n_Principal Mino
rs and Absolute Values_ \nThe classification of matrices by their principa
l minors has been an\narea of interest to many since at least the 1980s. I
n this talk we\nexpand on this work by outlining a proof that\, if two ort
hogonal\nprojection matrices have the same principal minors\, then the\nco
ordinatewise absolute value of their images coincide. Generalizing\nthe id
eas of the proof gives rise to a stratification of the\nGrassmannian which
is coarser than the well-known matroid\nstratification of Gelfand-Goresky
-MacPherson-Serganova. We conclude\nthis talk with some applications of th
is theorem to geometry. \nMC 5403
