SUMMARY:Geometry and Topology Seminar | Jesse Madnick | The Morse index of\
 nquartic minimal hypersurfaces
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:JESSE MADNICK (SETON HALL UNIVERSITY)\n\n_The Morse index of qu
artic minimal hypersurfaces_\n\nGiven a minimal hypersurface S in a round
sphere\, its Morse index is\nthe number of variations that are area-decrea
sing to second order. In\npractice\, computing the Morse index of a given
minimal hypersurface is\nextremely difficult\, requiring detailed informat
ion about the Laplace\nspectrum of S. Indeed\, even for the simplest case
in which S is\nhomogeneous\, the Morse index of S is not known in general.
\nIn this talk\, we compute the Morse index of two such minimal\nhypersur
faces. Moreover\, we observe that their spectra contain both\ninteger eige
nvalues as well as (irrational) eigenvalues that are not\nexpressible in r
adicals. This is joint work with Gavin Ball (Missouri)\nand Uwe Semmelmann
  (Stuttgart). \nMC 5403
