SUMMARY:Student Number Theory Seminar | Julius Frizzell | Lehmer's Conjectu
 re\nand Related Problems
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:JULIUS FRIZZELL (UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO)\n\n_Lehmer's Conjectur
e and Related Problems_\n\nThe Mahler measure of a polynomial is the produ
ct of the moduli of\nit's roots lying outside the unit disk. Lehmer's conj
ecture says that\,\namong polynomials with integer coefficients that are n
ot cyclotomic\,\nthere exists a polynomial with minimal Mahler measure. We
will discuss\nthe history and original motivation behind Lehmer's problem
and the\nknown partial results. We will also look at other problems relat
ed to\nMahler measure\, such as questions arising from looking at the divi
 sors\nof Newman polynomials.\n\nMC 5479
