SUMMARY:Student Algebra seminar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:ROBERT GARBARY\, PURE MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT\, UNIVERSITY OF WA
 TERLOO\n\n\"THE ZARISKI TOPOLOGY\"\n\nFor a ring R\, let Spec(R) denote th
e set of its prime ideals. We are\ngoing to topologize Spec(R) by demandin
g that R is the ring of\ncontinuous functions (into where?) defined on Spe
c(R). This is called\nthe Zariski Topology. It is so named because\, in th
e case that R is\nthe coordinate ring of an affine variety X\, we will see
that Spec(R)\nis almost equal to (whatever that means) X\, and that the t
opology on\nSpec(R) is almost the same as the usual Zariski topology on X.
