SUMMARY:Student colloquium
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:ROBERT GARBARY\, DEPARTMENT OF PURE MATHEMATICS\, UNIVERSITY OF
WATERLOO\n\n\"PARAMETRIZING POINTS ON ALGEBRAIC CURVES\"\n\nAlgebraic Geo
metry is the study of subsets of kn (here\, k is a\nfield)
defined by the vanishing of polynomial\nequations - these objects are cal
led algebraic varieties. For example\,\nthe circle S1  R2 is an algebraic
variety (over R) since it is\nprecisely the zero locus of the polynomial
 x2+y2  1 2 R[x\; y]. The\ncircle is an example of a plane curve - the van
ishing of a single\npolynomial inside the plane k2. These objects get comp
 licated very\nquickly.
